Crea’s Column
Kumihimo and the People of the Well

In this month’s Japanese Beauty and Prayer, we explored kumihimo, the traditional Japanese art of braided cords.

Colorful threads cross from side to side, gradually coming together to form a single cord.

As I watched this process, what I found particularly fascinating was that the individual threads themselves do not become stronger.

What changes is the relationship between the threads.

The red thread remains red, and the white thread remains white.

Without losing their own colors, they change places, cross one another, and support one another. In doing so, they create a single, strong structure.

And curiously, the very structure that creates this strength also gives rise to beautiful patterns.

As I thought about what it means to weave connections, I was reminded of the People of the Well who appear in Episode 10 of Godyffai: The Divine Chronicles, “The Journey to Megrez.”

Long ago, the People of the Well lived in the Kingdom of Godyffai.

They had their own language, known as the Language of the Well, as well as a civilization of their own.

Even so, they lived alongside the people of Godyffai, accepting and respecting one another’s cultures.

Different things, remaining different, yet existing together.

In some way, it resembles kumihimo.

But through a trap laid by the witch Dovdivilini, that bond was severed.

Falsely accused, the People of the Well were driven from their homeland. After a long journey, they finally arrived in Megrez.

Three thousand years passed.

When Carrera visits the ancient castle of Megrez, which appears almost to be a ruin, she encounters something extraordinary.

Countless stones forming the castle’s inner walls are densely inscribed with pictographs and mathematical formulas. Among them are words from the Language of the Well—the same language that had also survived in Godyffai.

The same thing had endured within two civilizations that had long since been separated.

And the People of the Well, too, had never forgotten Godyffai.

Though driven from their homeland, they did not allow their history to end in hatred alone. They preserved their language and culture and continued to live in a new land.

We may feel as though each of us has been formed on our own, yet in truth, we live our lives constantly crossing paths with countless things: words we have received, someone else’s memories, and a sense of beauty handed down from distant ages.

At times, even a bond that seems to have been severed may unexpectedly reveal itself again in another place.

There is a strength that cannot be born from a single thread.

There are patterns that a single thread can never create.

Rather than dyeing different things the same color, we allow each to remain different and bring out the life within one another.

Perhaps within the ancient art of kumihimo lies a quiet and beautiful wisdom—a wisdom for living together and for carrying something forward across time.

And once things have deeply intertwined, even if they are later separated by great distances, they leave traces of their memory within one another.

The Language of the Well preserved in Godyffai, and the hearts of the People of the Well who still long for their homeland even after three thousand years, seem to tell us this quietly.
