Journey to Megrez

Godyffai | The Divine Chronicles I – Fortissimo Arc
Episode 10:Journey to Megrez

On the morning of departure, the members of Kalera had gathered at Turripo Holy Spring.

Turripo Holy Spring lay to the south of the vast Main Temple, guarded all around by a beautiful birch grove.
It seemed truly a gift bestowed by the Deity: it welled up suddenly in the middle of that grove, brimming with a mystical green so lovely it was almost fragrant.
According to tradition, its color changed with the heart of the one who drew its water.

But this morning, Turripo Holy Spring was a deep indigo, like sapphire.
Every Godyffai knew that when Turripo Holy Spring showed this color, it was an omen that something was about to happen.
The members of Kalera braced themselves: the harsh journey had already begun.
Yet apart from the color of the spring, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. It was an utterly peaceful morning.

Incidentally, High Priest Ordin had given the members of Kalera a stylish gift.
Refreshing uniforms, white at their base.
Easy to move in and refined, each uniform differed in its details from person to person, and the color of the stole hanging from the shoulders doubled as a name tag.

Forve’s was red, Fara’s purple, Hana’s yellow, Pashel’s green, Riol’s blue, and Xenor’s orange. With just one more color, it would have been a rainbow.

Then High Priest Ordin made a meaningful remark.
“We needed indigo as well.”

At last the time came, and High Priest Ordin gave his parting words.
“Members of Kalera, give everything you have, and bring back brilliant results.
And above all, be sure to return safely, every one of you. I wish you good luck.”

Kalera was to head straight for Megrez by teleportation.
They put their arms around one another’s shoulders and formed a circle.
The uniforms, wet with morning dew, shone a silvery white, and the colors of the stoles were dazzling to the eye. The many priests gathered around watched Kalera’s gallant figures with fervent hearts.

……And then it happened.
“Wait~!! Fara, Hana, you two! These~!!”

Looking over, they saw Marm of the Aersbul dormitory running toward them, out of breath.
In her hands were two bags of some kind. They must contain something important.
Seeing Marm’s plump, ample waistline, High Priest Ordin couldn’t help muttering,
“In any case, we would have run short of fabric……”

The moment Marm laid a hand on the circle, Forve’s consciousness connected with the Great Consciousness.

Whoosh……

Kalera had departed.
All that remained behind were Turripo Holy Spring, still brimming with its deep indigo, and the two bags Marm had been carrying.

The journey to Megrez was extremely arduous.
As expected, it had been quite difficult to teleport such a large group all at once.
Even so, the reason Kalera could keep heading steadily for Megrez without wavering was solely their curiosity about, and fervent longing for, the Boat of Ryuph.

Again and again they crossed dark, treacherous stretches of time-space, sometimes taking a wrong turn and straying onto another planet, until at last, after great hardship, they reached Megrez. It was a far more desolate planet than they had imagined.
Yet traces of civilization remained, from which they could infer that the inhabitants of this planet had possessed advanced intelligence.

Sadly, however, the value of that civilization seemed to have grown old and decayed.
The farther they advanced into the ruins of Megrez, the more clearly they understood how beautiful the streets of this planet had once been,
and Kalera’s hearts tightened.

“……Somehow, it makes me want to cry.”
Marm said.

Standing atop a small hill shaped like a sheep’s back, they could see broad avenues extending in an orderly radial pattern,
and at the very center of them, a crumbling castle.

“That castle—it’s just like Sarnortodipli Castle!”
Riol said. Yet there was no sign of anyone in the castle.

“Does no one live there? There isn’t a soul in sight—not even a stray cat.”
“Long ago, a great many people lived here, you see.”
“A great many people?”
“Oh yes, indeed. Many young gentlefolk, as youthful as yourselves.”
“Huh?”
“Huh?”
“Huh?”

Turning toward the unfamiliar voice, they found a sage standing there.
“Eeek!!”
“Whoa! You scared me!! Who are you?”

Kalera’s shock was only natural. The sage had slipped quietly into their midst and was gazing, deep in thought, at the stately old castle together with them.

“Oh, do forgive me. I had no intention of startling you. It’s just that a rather nostalgic feeling came over me.”
“Who are you? Are you from this planet?”
“Forgive my late introduction. I am Gyubel, the old chancellor who lives in that castle.”
“A chancellor? Is there a king in that castle as well?”
“Yes. Sadly, the King is bedridden with illness at present…… But allow me to guide you. This way, please.”

Kalera followed Gyubel. Strangely, although the castle seemed to be right there before their eyes, one winding, maze-like path after another appeared and bewildered Kalera.
“Chancellor Gyubel, what is this?”
“Ah, it seems that because the castle cannot recognize your faces, its security is working at multiple layers. Though you would not guess it to look at it, this castle in fact still boasts a highly advanced civilization. Its ruined appearance is for defense. You will understand soon enough.”

With that, Gyubel placed his hand on an Earth Sigil carved beside a heavy door. A rough-hewn black quartz was set in the ring on his middle finger, and it seemed that, in addition to facial recognition, the ring reacted with layer upon layer of Earth Sigils to open the door.

The door opened.
“Oh!!”

The moment Kalera stepped into the castle, they gasped. The interior, skillfully assembled from stones large and small, was so sturdy that no one could have imagined it from outside, and every single stone was densely inscribed with hieroglyphs and numerals. Those walls of stone stretched up toward the heavens as far as the eye could see.

An overwhelming, dizzying amount of information. One glance was enough to show how impregnable a defense the castle used to hold off outside enemies. For each time Gyubel passed, the inscriptions responded to the black quartz and made new passageways appear one after another, leading everyone deeper and deeper inside.

Of course, Kalera had no idea what the stone walls meant. But, happily, they recognized parts of those intricate inscriptions here and there. For the hieroglyphs were the Language of the Well.

“This is the Language of the Well, isn’t it?”
Forve said.

“Indeed. To know the Language of the Well—you truly are our kin, after all. Oh, but of course I knew it all along. The moment I first saw you from afar, of course.”
“We have come from the Kingdom of Godyffai in Mythic Era, Year 128V.”
“Godyffai!! Godyffai, you say!! You cannot know how deeply my people, the People of the Well, long for and love that beautiful sound! That the pure spirit of Godyffai should visit us again, we who were driven from our homeland!! Cough! Cough, cough, cough!”
Gyubel seemed so excited that he choked. Kalera, too, felt their hearts pound at this unexpected turn of events.

How far had they climbed through this castle, so old and yet so new, led by Gyubel? The Chamber of the Heights, at the very top of the castle, was the Royal Chamber. The King’s quarters were so nostalgically like a salon in Godyffai that Kalera could not help wondering whether the King might already be a Godyffai herself.

“Your Majesty, you have guests.”
They could hear Gyubel speaking thus in the next room.

“Guests? Who are they?”
Whoever Gyubel was talking to had a sweet voice, like a young girl’s. While Kalera waited, puzzled, Gyubel ushered the party into the Royal Chamber. A silk-covered bed stood by the window, and a girl lay upon it.

The moment she saw Kalera, the girl smiled brightly and said,
“Tudientebecheh, Legi, Khatruva, Stomatifu-Beastrinev.”

Then Gyubel said,
“This is King Khatruva, the fifteenth ruler of the People of the Well. Welcome to our Megrez.”

Forve said,
“I am Forve Godyffai, seventeenth Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Godyffai.
It is an honor to make your acquaintance, King Khatruva.”
“Oh my!! Godyffai, did you say? Gyubel, this isn’t a dream, is it?”
“No, Your Majesty. Pinch this Gyubel’s cheek and see. It is no dream.”
“How wonderful! There are good things in living after all, aren’t there, Gyubel?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”

The happy time that followed passed in the blink of an eye. Dinner was a simple one, but a large table was set at the King’s bedside, and Kalera was entertained by King Khatruva to their hearts’ content.

Sadly, King Khatruva seemed to suffer from an incurable illness. Whenever her breathing grew labored, Gyubel would rub her back, and at such times King Khatruva would tell Kalera not to mind her.

“I’m sorry. You have come all this way, and yet I cannot even show you around this planet.”
“No, Your Majesty, please don’t trouble yourself. Simply meeting you is honor enough for us.
Still, this castle is very much like Sarnortodipli, the old castle of Godyffai. One could even call it the Sarnortodipli of Megrez.”
Fara said.

At this, King Khatruva laughed and said,
“You will be surprised when you hear this castle’s name. You see, it is called Sarnoth Dyvrne.”
“Sarnoth Dyvrne?”
“This castle was built in imitation of Sarnortodipli Castle in the Kingdom of Godyffai.”
“What? In imitation of Sarnortodipli Castle? What do you mean?”
“Telling it would take until dawn, but I feel so well tonight that I shall tell you a little more.”
So saying, King Khatruva urged Gyubel on, and Gyubel began to tell how the old castle of Megrez came to be.

“This Megrez is a planet of strange fate, you see. Trace its history back and—you may well be astonished—it leads to Godyffai.”
As he spoke, Gyubel quietly set a medicine bottle and a water pitcher at King Khatruva’s bedside.

“The spiritual homeland of my people, the People of the Well, is none other than the Kingdom of Godyffai, I’ll have you know. About a hundred years after the first king, King Youshuray, began ruling that small planet, our ancestors made their homes beside a spring—that was how it all began.
The Kingdom of Godyffai was an open country, tolerant toward other tribes as well, and we, the People of the Well, lived there very happily. Even in the age of the third king, King Gebram, we were permitted to enjoy the civilization unique to the People of the Well, and the Godyffai too would speak the Language of the Well, so that each accepted and respected the other’s civilization.
But I suppose that now there is not a single Godyffai who speaks the Language of the Well.

The Language of the Well is an exceedingly delicate language; as its name says, it began by turning the way a spring wells up into written characters.
Yes, indeed. The words the King spoke a moment ago were the Language of the Well. A beautiful language, is it not?
The Language of the Well is the pride of the People of the Well, and the proof of what we are.”

“One of our companions speaks the Language of the Well. Please wait a moment. I’ll introduce Reelia to you.”
Saying so, Fara called out to her crystal pendant. Then Reelia’s figure appeared in the pendant.

“Lady Reelia, we are now in Megrez, being hosted by King Khatruva of the People of the Well and Chancellor Gyubel.”

Reelia then said, beaming from ear to ear,
“The People of the Well!? How nostalgic! I had a dear friend among the People of the Well. She was truly as pure as a spring.”

“Toffshterta Ailshniteshila Itomanis Tidafftu Burgi”
Hearing Reelia’s words, King Khatruva spoke to Reelia.
“Souvreleneraij Ichhotofratine Barasmirila Legi Khatruva”
When Reelia answered King Khatruva, the two laughed with great delight.

Gyubel continued.
“Now only we remain of the People of the Well. An unfortunate incident befell us.
It was in the age of the fifth ruler, Queen Sythifa. Ensnared by the trap of the dreaded witch Dovdibelini, the People of the Well were falsely accused and banished from the Kingdom of Godyffai.

No matter how much we explained that it was a bald-faced lie, a complete false charge, no one would understand. Our opponent was Dovdibelini, before whom even the Deity would flinch. It was probably not a trap devised merely to banish one rural tribe.

Not long afterward, Queen Sythifa drew the Sword of Deargilg.
Because of that, we came to be regarded as complete enemies of the Kingdom of Godyffai.”

“However, there is no grudge against Godyffai in the hearts of us, the People of the Well. The only one at fault is Dovdibelini alone. The People of the Well have long cherished the spirit of hating the wrong but never the one who committed it.”
King Khatruva said.

“Indeed, one might call that the spirit of the People of the Well.”
“Banished from Godyffai, and you came all the way to Megrez?”
Pashel asked.

“We never imagined it would turn out to be such a distant journey. In the end, about three thousand years ago,
we finally settled on this Megrez.”
“What on earth was the false charge?”
“The charge that we were hiding Zavalaar, the lost treasure of Lady Souju, King Youshuray’s most beloved consort.”
“……Lady Souju’s Zavalaar.”

“Proving that something does not exist is a devil’s proof—utterly impossible. In the end, we, the People of the Well, left our homeland of Godyffai,
and had no choice but to make Megrez our new land.”
“But this planet, too, is truly a good planet. We, the People of the Well, love Megrez just as we love Godyffai.”
King Khatruva said.

“Forgive my saying so, but at first glance the outside looks like ruins……”
Riol said.
“There was a war some time ago……”
King Khatruva said, her eyes downcast.

“Where are the others?”
Hana asked.

“Mostly underground. The underground is the second homeland of the People of the Well, you see. Let me show you how beautiful it is beneath this Sarnoth Dyvrne. Gyubel, take our guests below.”
Having said so, King Khatruva continued,
“I shall rest a little. Let us meet again tomorrow.”
With that, she quietly closed her beautiful eyes.

Led by Gyubel down to the underground, Kalera was astonished all over again. Clear water ran in layers alongside rows of thick, orderly underground corridors, and above and below them spread more waterways of different, complex shapes.
The water was silent, making no sound, yet its volume was by no means small. Where did so much water come from? They soon found out.

Five levels below ground, a large, beautiful spring like a fountain welled up unceasingly. Its water was the mystical, deep emerald green that Turripo Holy Spring shows when its power is at its greatest, and small white bubbles ringed the welling water like seashells.

And a very pleasant scent hung in the air. It came from the lush greenery growing thick around the spring; riding the wind, at times it smelled of herbs, and at others, spicy and stimulating.

Naturally, many flowers grew among the greenery as well.
And although it was underground, the place was bathed in very bright light—for the Fountain of Libera was itself a source of light. The spring sent its emerald-green light up through many levels, promoting photosynthesis and nurturing the flowers and greenery.
